Hymn to commemorate Edith Cavell
(Tune: Sine Nomine ‘For all the saints’)
For Edith who was called to nurse and care –
a saint of God, of faith, and faithful prayer,
who, with the church, rejoicing would declare:
Alleluia! Alleluia.
She loved to serve, and minister God’s grace,
she cared for all, no matter what their race;
She knew the fate that she might have to face:
Alleluia! Alleluia.
Two hundred men – were saved and had new life,
leaving the cost of battlefield and strife;
She gave them back to parents, child and wife:
Alleluia! Alleluia.
For Edith who did pay the final price,
betrayed by one who used a sly device;
She gave to God her personal sacrifice:
Alleluia! Alleluia.
We will remember, and we will rejoice –
one hundred years since Edith made her choice;
May we, with others, gladly add our voice:
Alleluia! Alleluia.
