Just suppose…

Just suppose that they had asked someone else to be
the Sacristan in 2006.
Three people were interviewed
and the job might have been given to someone else.
Someone else would have rung the bell,
filled and lit candles, ordered supplies, welcomed people with a smile,
answered questions, chased the cat, provided stones, shells and tealights,
prepared Communion, written the healing prayers,
stood attentive through services,
cleared up late at night.

For a brief moment I thought that this was indeed the case,
but then I pinched myself and realised
that this had indeed been me.

But just suppose…
