The Abbey and I

We get on OK – the Abbey and I.
I do not feel I own it or possess it (though some would think I do or should)
and it does not own or possess me.
It is a mutual relationship in which we both give and receive,
in which we let the other be ourselves,
in which we have time together and time apart.

The times when we are closest
are when we are alone together.
Early in the morning or late at night.
Others are elsewhere doing other things.
The Abbey and I – we are looking after each other
and getting to know each other better.

I shall my miss my friend, the Abbey.
The Abbey has had many, many friends in the past,
and will do so in the future.
Then, so have I, and so will I.
But, this relationship, like all relationships, has been special.
I hope and pray and believe that,
just as a little bit of my heart will always belong to Iona Abbey,
a little bit of the heart of Iona Abbey will always belong to me.
