To the Robin
You are often in our gardens
found feeding on the ground.
We like you in the Winter – though
you’re here the whole year round.
Master or Miss – we cannot tell,
you both look just the same;
you venture near our homes because –
we can be very tame...
... and you know you’ll get some titbits
if you cock a cheeky head
and encourage us politely
to spare a little bread.
How shall we value you, small friend?
Your song and your red breast?
Shall we say that of our birds
we love the robin best?
