Reliving the Ascension of Jesus using Luke 24 v 50 – 53
For use on May 21st 2020
Read the passage first:
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshipped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Then note that there are six actions described in this short passage:
- Jesus leading the disciples out to the ‘vicinity’ of Bethany
- Jesus lifting up his hands and blessing his disciples
- Jesus being taken up into heaven whilst he was in the act of blessing them
- The disciples worshipping Jesus who had just been taken from them
- The disciples returning to Jerusalem with great joy
- The disciples praising God – continually – at the temple
Now read the passage again, reading a phrase at a time (dividing according to the actions listed above). Pause and imagine the scene, picturing each action.
Imagine that you are present in each scene. Take as long as you want. If you are with someone else, do this in silent reflection but share your experience at the end.
Use this prayer based on the passage:
Jesus, lead me/us out as you led the disciples… (imagine your ‘vicinity of Bethany’)
Please bless me/us today as you blessed your friends… (imagine him doing this)
Thank you for your resurrection and ascension and your victory over evil and death..
I/we worship and adore you…
Help me/us to return to the routine of our lives with the joy of your blessing and
presence… (Remember that Jesus promised to be with his disciples always)
May I/we praise you every day, in every way…
Amen.
